Major League Soccer 2012, Week 7 Preview: Who Wants To Be Second Best?

Sporting are the best team in MLS so now it is time for teams to battle for number two.

There used to be this fun debate, “who is the best team in MLS?” People would argue and argue and argue about it. Is it the Galaxy? Maybe RSL? How about the Sounders? Wrong, wrong, wrong. It’s Sporting, who have won all seven of their matches this season and have ended any discussion as to who might be the best team in the league.

Now, there is the super fun discussion about who is the second best team in MLS. It’s all of the above teams, except for the Galaxy, plus maybe the surprising Earthquakes and resurgent Red Bulls. Who’s number two!?

Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

You would think at some point that NBC would be a match to televise that isn’t the worst. Apparently this isn’t that point.

Pick: Draw, 1-1.

Columbus Crew vs. Houston Dynamo

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live

The great Dynamo road show continues, although with BBVA Compass Stadium nearing completion it is almost over. Someone once said, “the final road trips are always the toughest.” I think.

Pick: Draw, 0-0.

Colorado Rapids vs. LA Galaxy

Saturday, 9:00 p.m. ET, MLS Live

Back on the road against a good Rapids team, now is a good time to find out if the Galaxy have really turned it around or if they just played a bad Timbers team at home last week. We will also find out that Denver does in fact get warm and toasty.

Pick: Galaxy, 2-1.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. FC Dallas

Saturday, 10:00 p.m. ET, MLS Live

Sporting tore apart the Whitecaps defense. Now they get to deal with Brek Shea and Blas Perez, who if you hadn't noticed, might be the best striker in MLS.

Pick: Dallas, 2-1.

Portland Timbers vs. Sporting Kansas City

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live

Every lazy person will say that Kansas City is unbeatable until proven otherwise. Kansas City is unbeatable until proven otherwise.

Pick: Kansas City, 2-0.

Chivas USA vs. Philadelphia Union

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live

The Union have been Nowak-ed.

Pick: Chivas, 100-0.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Real Salt Lake

Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live

For all of the talk about Chris Wondolowski, San Jose has had some of the best midfield play in the league this season. Sam Cronin has plenyed splendidly and both Rafael Baca and Khari Stephenson have upped their level of play, but Salt Lake has had the best midfield in MLS for a few years now. Earthquakes: "Challenge accepted."

Pick: Draw, 1-1.

D.C. United vs. New York Red Bulls

Saturday, 6:00 p.m. ET, Galavision

This used to be the best rivalry in MLS, then other teams joined the league. Also, DC forgot how to play soccer, which matched New York’s quality of play since year one.

Pick: New York, 2-1.
