Columbus Crew Sign Saprissa’s Jairo Arrieta

The flagging Columbus Crew offense could use a shot in the arm, but it may have to wait a couple months before reinforcements arrive. At least one player will eventually arrive, though, after the Crew announced the signing of Costa Rican forward Jairo Arrieta.

Arrieta is currently playing for Costa Rican giants Saprissa and will be eligible to play for the Crew when the summer transfer window opens on June. 27.

“Jairo is a proven goal scorer who we have had our eye on for some time,” Crew head coach Robert Warzycha said in a team release. “He is quick and agile in and around the box, and we expect him to be a great addition to our attack.”

Arrieta has three caps with the Costa Rican national team and has spent the last five seasons with Saprissa. Arrieta scored 45 goals during those five seasons and he had the second most goals during the 2011 Invierno campaign.
