Liverpool Vs. Fulham, 2012 Premier League: Cottagers Get First Ever Win At Anfield

Fulham did something on Tuesday that they had not done in 30 previous trips to Anfield -- they won. Of course, they didn't score in the match, with Martin Skrtel putting the ball in his own net for the lone tally, but Fulham won't complain. They have their first ever win at Anfield, although seemingly everyone can get a result on the red side of Liverpool nowadays.

Tuesday’s loss marked the second consecutive loss for the Reds at Anfield and fourth loss at the ground this season. More astonishingly, they have dropped 30 points at home this season, having won just five of their 18 home contest.

In fairness to Liverpool on this occasion, Liverpool rested several starters in advance of this weekend's FA Cup final and Fulham capitalized just five minutes in. It was former Red John Arne Riise who created the goal, getting up the flank before crossing for Alex Kacaniklic. He couldn't quite get a hold of the ball, just defelcting it, but it went off of Skrtel and in for what would prove to be the winning goal.

Without Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard or Craig Bellamy, Liverpool looked short on options. They did almost score once when Jonjo Shelvery looked to have scored, but Brede Hangeland cleared the ball off of the line and Fulham were still in front.

Clint Dempsey and Damien Duff bothered the Liverpool Daniel Agger-less back line all match, causing the Reds to lose their shape and opening up opportunities for the Cottagers, but neither managed to break through. Kerim Frei almost did after coming on as a substitute, but his shot hit the bar.

None of that mattered to Fulham, though. Missed opportunities, missing Liverpool players and a team that has not been able to defend their home turf could not dampen the Cottagers’ spirits when the final whistle went. After all, they had finally broken the Anfield hex.
