Chelsea Vs. Newcastle, 2012 Premier League: Papiss Cisse Steals The Show

Chelsea controlled possession for 90 minutes against Newcastle and created more chances than their opponents, but it didn't matter in the slightest. Papiss Cisse scored two absolute stunners, the second of which will be a serious contender to be named goal of the season at the end of the year. His shots were only two of four shots on target for the Magpies, but it was all they needed in a 2-0 victory.

Cisse now has 13 goals in 12 matches in a Newcastle shirt. The first came in the 19th minute on a quick move, when he was given entirely too much space. Taking a pass from Davide Santon at the edge of the penalty area, he popped the ball up to himself with his first shot, then hit a stellar volley into the back of the net at the far post with his second touch.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead just before halftime, and they might have effectively ended the game if they managed to do it. In the 44th minute, Yohan Cabaye set up Demba Ba for a shot, but he cracked the crossbar.

In the 60th minute, there was a scary moment in which John Obi Mikel and Cheik Tiote crashed into each other, with Tiote getting the worst of the collision. He appeared to suffer a head injury, and based on the amount of time it took to get him off the pitch, it's feared to be a serious one. He was not stretchered off until eight minutes after he went down.

That led to the referee giving 10 minutes of stoppage time, but Cisse only needed four to find a second goal. Shola Ameobi gets credit on the box score for the assist, but it seems like a discredit to Cisse to give anyone an assist for his second goal. From the far right side of the pitch, he hit a ridiculous swerving shot that curled over and around Petr Cech and into the side of the net to his left.

Newcastle are now in fifth place, behind Tottenham on goal differential and ahead of Chelsea by four points. Both teams trail Arsenal by one point.
