San Jose Earthquakes Vs. Chivas USA, 2012 MLS: Late Goal Salvages Tie For Quakes

Alan Gordon scored an 88th minute goal off a header inside the near post to salvage a point for the San Jose Earthquakes in a 1-1 tie with Chivas USA on Sunday. Gordon was able to get some space between the Chivas USA defender and Sam Garza's pass made it almost indefensible for goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Up until Gordon's goal, it appeared Chivas USA would register yet another road victory. Despite their 0-5-0 home record, they have claimed 10 of 15 points on the road. Chivas USA had grabbed the early lead on a 4th minute goal from Jose Correa, who was making his first start and just his second appearance since joining the team. Correa, who's still just 19, did well to finish James Riley's cross despite being tightly marked.

The Earthquakes had largely dominated the match even before Gordon's goal, firing off 24 shots to Chivas USA's five. Although they put six of those shots on frame, Kennedy was rarely tested.

By pulling out the point, the Earthquakes moved into second-place in the overall points table and now trail Real Salt Lake by three points, but have two matches in hand.
