Chivas USA Vs. LA Galaxy, 2012 MLS: Goats Get First SuperClasico Win In Five Years

Who knew that all Chivas USA had to do to fix their home woes was play the LA Galaxy? The Goats picked up their first home win of the season on Saturday thanks to a Jose Erik Correa penalty, taking down the Galaxy, 1-0, for their first SuperClasico win in five years.

With a fresh lineup that included new acquisitions Danny Califf and Juan Agudelo, Chivas got off to a quick start as they tried to break their long drought against their rivals. Miller Bolanos had the best chance of the first half, hitting a great shot that beat Brian Perk, but couldn't beat the post as it struck the bar.

The Galaxy came out looking much better in the second half and almost scored on several occasions. A couple chances missed the frame and when they did manage to put a shot on goal, Dan Kennedy was there. The Chivas goalkeeper was brilliant in keeping LA scoreless and that paid off in the 71st minute.

Just as it looked like the Galaxy were gaining control of the match, Chivas got free and made the deciding play. Perk and Juan Agudelo collided on a Chivas cross, allowing the ball to fall for Correa. The Goats’ striker knocked the ball at goal, where it struck Junior Lopes’ arm. The referee showed Lopes the red card he deserved and Correa had a penalty. It actually took two penalties because the first once was called back for encroachment, but Correa made the second chance to seal the win for Chivas.
