Portland Timbers Vs. Chicago Fire, 2012 MLS: Own Goal Gets Timbers Win

It took an own-goal to make it happen, but the Portland Timbers ended a three-match winless streak and scored more than one goal in a game for the first time March 31 while beating the Portland Timbers 2-1 on Sunday. The win jumped them ahead of the LA Galaxy, meaning last year's Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup winners are now in last place.

The Timbers deserve credit for creating the chances on both their goals. On the first, it was Eric Brunner finishing off a sequence that started with a corner kick in the 20th minute.

The Fire managed to get the equalizer from Jalil Anibaba about 19 minutes later, as he finished off an assist from Marco Pappa, who had intercepted a very poor clearance attempt by Stephen Smith.

Another corner kick allowed the Timbers to take back the lead in the 52nd minute. Sal Zizzo's delivery was headed across the goal by Kris Boyd and then hit off Fire midfielder Logan Pause and into the goal.
