Roberto Di Matteo Confirms Possible Loan Move For Michael Essien

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that the club are in talks over a loan move for Michael Essien.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that the club are in talks over a loan move for Michael Essien.

The Ghanaian international was a notable omission the Blues’ squad this evening to face Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup, and Di Matteo confirmed that he was left out due to discussion over a loan move.

Arsenal have been the club most heavily-linked with the midfielder, and it appears the 29-year-old could be making a move to The Emirates Stadium as Arsene Wenger seeks to bolster his midfield option after the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona, but there are also suggestions that other clubs could be interested in him.

Michael Essien signed for Chelsea for £24m in 2005, but has found himself in and out of the Blues’ first team in recent years, partly owing to a string of injuries. He played just 14 games in the Premier League last season.
