Mainz vs. Freiburg: Final score 0-0, It was cold... Real cold

Mainz and Freiburg stayed in European contention with a scoreless draw.

Alex Grimm

Mainz and Freiburg played a scoreless draw in below freezing temperatures on Saturday afternoon. The point keeps both sides in the fight for a European place.

There was very little action in the first half as both sides struggled to adapt to the cold. Things finally picked up ten minutes into the second half. Freiburg thought they took the lead when Pavel Krmas scored, but he was judged to be in an offside position. The goal was disallowed.

The match really opened up with action at this point with both sides getting opportunities to score. Mainz’s Nicolai Müller nearly scored, but his shot was blocked by Krmas. Then Zdenek Pospech came close twice for Mainz, but he wasn’t able to beat Oliver Baumann.

Second half substitute Shawn Parker was sent off late for Mainz, but Freiburg was unable to capitalize on the extra man in the dying minutes.

The two clubs drop down the table one place due to Schalke’s big win on Friday over Hannover. Freiburg is in 6th place, and Mainz is in 7th place.
