Tottenham Hotspur vs. Hull City: Final score 1-0, late penalty sees Spurs win

Roberto Soldado scored a penalty as Tottenham Hotspur just about scraped a 1-0 win against Hull City.

Stop me if you've seen this before: Tottenham Hotspur win 1-0 thanks to a Roberto Soldado penalty after being outplayed for the majority of the match. Once again, Spurs grabbed the points through a spot kick, this time against Hull City, who made a valiant effort and could easily have claimed a draw at White Hart Lane.

The match was phenomenally dull. The hosts were having serious trouble moving the ball around thanks to the Tigers' packed defensive line, and whenever Hull did manage to go forward, they didn't have the quality to carve open the sort of chances that would have troubled Hugo Lloris. Tom Huddlestone looked in the mood and might have sent the game down a very different path had any of his long-range efforts been on target, but they were all amiss.

It picked up a little bit in the second half when Aaron Lennon was moved from left to right, but Spurs had no real answer to Hull until a handball by Ahmed Elmohamady, who was attempting to block a cross, gave Soldado his chance to win it from the spot. The striker made no mistake, sending Steve Harper the wrong way and ensuring that Tottenham remain both largely unwatchable and at the business end of the table.

Tottenham Hotspur starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Hugo Lloris; Jan Vertonghen, Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson, Kyle Walker; Sandro, Paulinho; Aaron Lennon, Lewis Holtby, Andros Townsend; Roberto Soldado.

Goals: Soldado 80’ (p)

Hull City starting lineup (4-5-1): Steve Harper; Maynor Figueroa, Curtis Davies, Alex Bruce, Liam Rosenior; Paul McShane, George Boyd, David Meyler, Tom Huddlestone, Ahmed Elmohamedy; Yannick Sagbo.
