English League Cup 2013: Leicester City upset Fulham; Chelsea and United advance
Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham all advanced to the quarterfinals of this season’s league cup, but the big shock of the day saw Leicester City knock out Fulham.
Chelsea booked their place in the quarterfinals defeating Arsenal, 2-0, thanks to goals from César Azpilicueta and Juan Mata. Arsene Wenger rolled out a mix of first choice and reserve players, but you really can't blame him for having his priorities focused elsewhere with the Gunners currently leading the Premier League and battling to advance in the Champions League.
Fulham's bad season got worse as they were upset by Championship side Leicester City, 4-3. Giorgos Karagounis appeared to have pushed the match to extra time after scoring an equalizer in the 87th minute, but Lloyd Dyer's goal a minute later put the Foxes back in front to stay. West Ham advanced past Burnley thanks to two late penalties, while Manchester United were untroubled by Norwich City.
Stoke City were cruising over Birmingham City with a man advantage and a 3-1 lead, but two late goals from Peter Lovenkrands, the second three minutes into stoppage time, pulled the Blues even and sent the match to extra time. The teams scored a goal each in the final 30 minutes, with Birmingham having to come from behind yet again, but the Potters advanced on penalties.
Here’s a rundown of the scores from Tuesday’s league cup matches.
