A heavily-rotated Manchester City team had to overcome an early Newcastle United onslaught and wait until extra time before finally finding the back of the net, though two goals in the first half of extra time from Álvaro Negredo and Edin Džeko proved sufficient to send them through to the quarterfinals of the Capital One Cup.

It took until extra time for the deadlock to be broken, though Manchester City eventually had enough to overcome Newcastle and progress to the Capital One Cup quarterfinals.

The first good chance of the game fell to the hosts inside the opening ten minutes after Shola Ameobi's header bounced through for Papiss Cissé, though the Senegalese striker's flick went wide of Costel Pantilimon's post. That set the tone for the rest of the half, with Newcastle the more dangerous but unable to break the deadlock.
Ameobi had a good chance of his own on the half hour, though his volley towards the far post was palmed away by Pantilimon. The striker had the ball in the net a couple of minutes later, though was correctly adjudged to have been in an offside position when he tucked in Cissé‘s drilled cross-shot towards the far post.
Vurnon Anita squandered another chance for the Magpies with just over ten minutes of the half remaining, volleying a poor City clearance just wide. Manuel Pellegrini's team had barely been in the game at all, and were extremely fortunate to be level at the halftime break.
However, they bounced back with much more urgency after the restart, and almost found themselves ahead in bizarre circumstances just past the hour. After snapping at the heels of Newcastle keeper Tim Krul, Jesús Navas nicked the ball in a tight angle and laid it back for James Milner, though the winger curled the ball over the partially-open goal from distance.
Despite Newcastle's forays forward being more limited in the second half, City rarely actually tested the Magpies' goal. First half substitute Álvaro Negredo should've scored with just over 10 minutes of normal time left, though his cute lob only found the side-netting. The game opened out with opportunities at both ends, though the score stayed goalless. Extra time beckoned.
Only a couple of minutes into extra time Newcastle were presented with the best chance of the entire match, though, true to form, Cissé couldn't convert after receiving Hatem Ben Arfa's fantastic lofted through-ball in the area. In the 99th minute, he was made to pay. Some intricate one-touch interchanges on the edge of the Magpies' box culminated in Edin Džeko pulling the ball into the area for Negredo, who beat Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to the ball and was left with a simple tap-in.
Sadly there was no way back for Newcastle, with Džeko turning from assister to goalscorer right at the end of the first half of extra time. He calmly rounded Krul after being slipped in by Milner, and rolled the ball into an open goal for 2-0.
