Newcastle United vs. Manchester City: Preview and TV schedule

Neither Manchester City or Newcastle United have had particularly fruitful starts to their league campaigns, with the former eighth in the table and the latter five points in arrears in 11th after the first nine matches. They face off over a place in the Capital One Cup quarterfinal at St James' Park on Wednesday, in a game probably perceived as more of a superfluous irritant than an opportunity to escape the Premier League blues.

City go into the game as favourites, despite looking set to rest almost all of their first team players. They've won every one of their last eight meetings against Newcastle, and haven't been beaten by the Magpies since a 1-0 loss back in 2005. Up front for Newcastle that day was Alan Shearer and goalscorer Michael Owen, so, yep, that was definitely a long time ago.

For this match, Newcastle will be without the injured duo of Fabricio Coloccini and Ryan Taylor, while Coloccini's compatriot Jonás Gutiérrez will continue to miss out as he's on leave for personal reasons. City only have captain Vincent Kompany sidelined, though manager Manuel Pellegrini will still almost definitely rotate heavily.
