Sunday’s early kick-off in Serie A could hardly have set a worse tone for the day’s action, as Siena and Cagliari played out a boring 0-0 at the Artemio Franchi.
In a game of few opportunities it was the visitors who went closest in the opening 20 minutes, via a looping header from Swedish midfielder Albin Ekdal -- and even that cleared the bar and landed on the roof of the net without testing Pegolo.
With Siena having their tall dangerman Innocent Emeghara on the field they played considerably more direct than their Sardinian opponents in the first half, though the Swiss international was ineffectual throughout.
Their first real chance came around half way into the first half from an Ângelo cross from the right, glanced by Alessio Sestu at the near post, though his header was comfortably held by Michael Agazzi. Sestu went close again with a curling shot from outside the box, though it whistled wide.
Just past the half hour Cagliari's Víctor Ibarbo had what would turn out to be the best chance of the game when he squirmed into the box, though unable to recreate his hat-trick heroics of last week, his touch was smothered in the area by Gianluca Pegolo before he could get a shot away.
While Cagliari were marginally the better team in the first half, that was reversed as Siena chased the win which would see them out of the relegation zone in the second. Just past the hour another Ângelo cross found Emeghara’s boot in the box, though his contact was poor and it was caught by Agazzi.
Other than that there were very few openings created at all, barring a late scare for the hosts in stoppage time when Nenê dribbled into the area down the right, though his low cross was blocked by Pegolo before it could be tapped in.
