La Liga Sunday: Sociedad takes back fourth, Depor gets a massive victory
Real Sociedad took back fourth place, Deportivo La Coruña won a relegation six-pointer and Atletico Madrid failed to take advantage of Madrid’s draw yesterday. Just another Sunday in La Liga.
Real Valladolid 1-3 Osasuna
Relegation threatened Osauna took a big step towards safety with a resounding 3-1 victory over Real Valladolid. Valladolid took the lead in the 11th minute thanks to an own goal from Ruben Gonzalez but the second half belonged to Osasuna. Kike Sola completed a brace in ten minutes to give Osasuna the lead and Miguel de las Cuevas put the game away in the 69th minute.
Mallorca 2-3 Deportivo La Coruña
Mallorca couldn't take advantage of their early lead after Víctor Casadesús put them ahead in the 11th minute. Three unanswered Depor goals put the visitors ahead to stay and earned them a massive victory in this relegation six-pointer. Silvio equalized for Depor in the 27th minute and Carlos Marchena put them ahead for good three minutes into the second half. Riki's 60th minute strike proved to be the match winner though as Mallorca's Emilio Nsue scored late but they couldn't complete the comeback.
Espanyol 2-2 Real Sociedad
Sociedad needed a late own-goal to escape with a draw they allowed them to hold on to fourth place in the league for another week. The two sides traded goals through the first 40 minutes with Espanyol's Sergio García opened the scoring in the 9th minute. David Zurutuza equalized for the visitors in the 23rd minute but Christian Stuani's 39th minute goal had the home side up 2-1 at halftime. Espanyol looked on their way to all three points until the 76th minute when Antoine Griezmann's cross was accidently put past Francisco Casilla by Javí Lopez.
Atletico Madrid 1-1 Valencia
Atletico failed to take advantage of Real Madrid dropping points yesterday and remained a point behind their rivals in third place thanks to a 1-1 draw with Valencia. Jonas put the visitors ahead in the 5th minute but Radamel Falcao answered less than a minute later to pull Atleti back even. That would be it for the scoring though as neither side could find the winner.
