Werder Bremen vs. Wolfsburg: Final score 0-3, Wolfsburg move ten points clear of relegation zone
Wolfsburg picked up a huge 3-0 victory against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Maximilian Arnold opened the scoring after thirteen minutes with a long distance shot that rolled past Sebastian Mielitz and into the back of the net. This is already Bremen’s worst season in Thomas Schaaf’s fourteen year reign as manager, and it didn’t get any better in this one.
It was 2-0 in the 27th minute. Ivica Olic dribbled into the Bremen penalty area, rounded Mielitz, and put the ball into the empty net.
Marko Arnautovic thought he pulled one back for Bremen early in the second half, but he was ruled offside. He nearly scored again a little later, but he was unable to turn in a cross from Kevin De Bruyne.
The misses would haunt Bremen after Ozkan Yildirim fouled Vieirinha in the penalty area. Diego calmly stepped up and converted the penalty in the 66th minute to make it 3-0.
With a ten point advantage on the relegation places and only four matches remaining, Wolfsburg can likely feel secure in the fact that they will avoid relegation this season. If they have any desire to get back into Europe next season, they must add more talent to the current squad.
Bremen are only five points out of the relegation zone and need a positive result soon to stem the tide of poor play that’s been affecting them.
