Siena relegated to Serie B after Genoa draw

Siena will take to the field against Napoli this afternoon knowing that they are already relegated, condemned by Genoa’s goalless draw against Inter Milan in an early kick-off.

The draw leaves Siena with an insurmountable advantage going into their final two games, and the thin, thin sliver of hope they had at the start of the round has completely evaporated.

The robur relegation writing seemed to be on the wall right from the start of the season, having been handed a six-point deduction for their involvement in the calcioscommesse scandal. With their initial results under coach Serse Cosmi deemed not good enough, he was fired in December and replaced by Giuseppe Iachini. The new appointment seemed to spark something of a revival, and after the revelatory signing of Innocent Emeghara, they began to move towards safety.

Sadly their improved form proved to be unsustainable, and they've now been relegated after four straight defeats. Only bottom club Pescara have had a weaker squad than Siena in Serie A this season, and with Emeghara certain to return to his parent club, it may be difficult for them to bounce straight back up.
