It was a bad day for Fortuna Düsseldorf. They lost while Augsburg and Hoffenheim won, relegating them to the 2. Bundesliga. Hoffenheim have to win a playoff to stay up, while Schalke beat Freiburg to secure fourth place.

Dennis GrombkowskiHummels was injured making a tackle on Hoffenheim’s Kevin Volland in the Dortmund area that led to a penalty call and Hoffenheim’s first goal. Immediately after the contact Hummels lifted his right leg into the air and hobbled away before going to ground.
Dortmund head coach Jürgen Klopp was fairly tight lipped about the injury after the match saying only that there was concern about Hummels with the final coming up.

The 2012-13 Bundesliga season is in the books, and we can wave goodbye to Greuther Fürth and Fortuna Düsseldorf. The former side was relegated a while ago, but the latter went down on the final day, with none of the results at the bottom of the table going in their favor.
Oh, and Bayern Munich won the title. But, like, back in October. Today had nothing to do with that.

Christof KoepselSchalke only needed a draw away to fifth placed Freiburg to book a spot in next year’s Champions League, but did better than that and never looked to be in too much trouble. A Freiburg goal caused some brief uneasy moments, but Schalke quickly hit back and went on to a comfortable 2-1 win.
The tied appeared to turn in the 54th minute, when Freiburg equalized on an excellent counter attack. Max Kruse set up a chance for Jan Rosenthal at the end of the move, but Timo Hildebrand came up with a save from close range. Unfortunately for Schalke, no one was tracking the trailing run of Jonathan Schmid, who finished off the rebound.

A win here sure would do Fortuna Düsseldorf some good considering they’re in the middle of an all important relegation battle. However, the best they can hope for this weekend will be a draw when they visit Hannover. A date in the Promotion/Relegation Playoff awaits them.
