Celta Vigo vs. Athletic Bilbao: Final score 1-1, Iago Aspas’ late goal grabs a point for Celta

Iago Aspas scored seven minutes from full time to save a point for relegation threatened Celta Vigo.

Celta Vigo picked up a point but failed to move out of the bottom three with their 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao. Oscar de Marcos put Athletic in front before halftime but Celta's leading scorer Iago Aspas equalized late to salvage a point for the relegation threatened club.

Celta remain in 18th, tied in points, behind Deportivo La Coruña on a tiebreaker. Depor could open up some breathing room if they can take points off Atletico Madrid but Celta’s single point gives them some wiggle room.

Celta were the better side for most of the first half but they failed to finish their chances and were punished two minutes before the halftime break.

De Marcos ran onto a pass from Aritz Aduriz, the final move in a great series of quick passes that picked apart the Celta defense and ended with the Athletic striker alone in the center of the Celta area. De Marcos didn’t even take a touch and one timed the ball into the roof of the net past Gorka Iraizoz.

Celta kept pushing but with seven minutes left to play in the game it looked as if their hopes of survival were about to take a major blow. Then Aspas came to the rescue.

Aspas controlled the ball on the right wing after it took a Celta-friendly bounce off a defender allowing the striker to dribble to the edge of the Athletic area and fire a low show that went under two defenders and just past the outstretched arm of Javi Varas to pull Celta even at 1-1.

Athletic pull eight points clear of the drop zone and look good tto avoid relegation despite not yet being mathematically safe.
