Werder Bremen vs. Hoffenheim: Final score 2-2, Schipplock rescues a point with two late goals

Sven Schipplock came on as a second half substitute and scored two goals in the dying minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw for Hoffenheim against Werder Bremen.

Werder Bremen conceded two goals in the final five minutes of the match and threw away a chance to nearly secure their survival in the Bundesliga for another season after a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The home supporters were in full voice early, and Werder immediately rewarded them. Nils Petersen sent Aaron Hunt a through ball into the box, and the midfielder was fouled by David Abraham earning a penalty. Not trusting anyone else in the side to not screw up on the penalty, Hunt stepped up and converted it himself.

Abraham nearly redeemed himself in the 19th minute, but his header from a Sejad Salihovic cross smashed into the crossbar. Bremen were quick to take advantage, and they doubled their lead five minutes later. Petersen latched onto a loose ball and quickly passed to Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian wasted no time and put the ball past Koen Casteels for the 2-0 lead.

Hoffenheim kept attacking and were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 85th minute. Substitute Sven Schipplock received a pass from Salihovic and beat Sebastian Mielitz to make it 2-1. He rescued a point for Hoffenheim in the dying minutes by getting onto the end of a rebound in the Werder box and burying it for the 2-2 draw.

The point keeps Werder in 14th place on 33 points. It does take them a full three points ahead of Fortuna Düsseldorf and Augsburg and five points over 17th place Hoffenheim. With only six points left to play for this season, both clubs could find themselves safe from relegation if results go their way in the final two weeks.
