Hamburg grabbed a late goal in the first half, but they were unable to hold on as Wolfsburg equalized in the second half and settled for a 1-1 draw.
Hamburg vs. Wolfsburg: Final score 1-1, Hamburg fall behind in race for Europe
Hamburg are now three points out of the race for Europe after managing only a draw against Wolfsburg on Sunday.
The two sides exchanged chances throughout the first half. Rafael Van der Vaart and Artjoms Rudnevs came close for Hamburg, while Vieirinha and Ivica Olic missed the target for Wolfsburg.
The first goal of the game came in the dying moments of the first half. Van der Vaart whipped in a cross, and Heiko Westermann headed the ball past Diego Benaglio for the 1-0 lead.
Rudnevs nearly made it 2-0 minutes into the second half, but his shot was just wide. The miss would come back to haunt them as Makoto Hasebe made it 1-1 with a header off of an excellent ball from Ivan Perisic.
Hamburg will rue the dropped point and are now a full three points behind Freiburg for the league’s final place in Europe. While they were always on the outside looking in, Wolfsburg can now officially kiss goodbye any hope of qualifying for Europe next season.
