Clint Dempsey’s debut was spoiled by Giles Barnes, who scored twice in Houston’s big win. Elsewhere, Portland and LA were impressive.

    Omar Gonzalez’s taunting of Nat Borchers was fine

    But it was what Gonzalez did after his goal that drew quite a bit of attention, at least on Twitter. In case you missed it, here’s the video:

    It’s not just that Gonzalez taunted Borcher, it’s how he did it: Almost literally laughing in his face. I’ll agree that this was probably not the classiest goal celebration that I’ve ever seen, but I’m also having a hard time doing anything but chuckling every time I watch it.

    The first 20 minutes were all Houston. It would have been frustrating for the Dynamo to not see payoff from that kind of dominance, but the 0-0 score didn’t stay that way for long.

    Who cares about that goal though? There is another, better goal to talk about as (again) Barnes scored a surefire goal of the week candidate from just about a quarter of the way up the field. There isn’t much of a sequence to speak of. Barnes took a wild shot from a quarter of the way up the pitch that somehow hit the top corner of the net. Gspurning did his best stretch, but it was a futile effort. That goal could not have been stopped.

    After a fast start that saw him score four goals in his first 10 games, Barnes had been in quite a scoring slump coming into this game. The last time he had found the back of the net was on May 8, a stretch of 11 starts without a goal. Despite the scoring slump, though, he’s been able to remain on the field and has only missed one game, which was because of injury.
