Josip Iličić‘s arrival confirmed by Fiorentina

Fiorentina have strengthened their attack even further, today confirming the arrival of playmaker Josip Iličić from Palermo.

Maurizio Lagana

With many of the stars of the thrilling young Palermo team of 2010-11 now departed, there was the risk that Josip Iličić would stagnate at the rosanero. However, Fiorentina have finally offered the playmaker a ticket out of Sicily for €9 million plus add-ons, today presenting him with the viola jersey. He's signed a contract until June 2018.

Over the last couple of seasons Iličić has mostly looked a shadow of the player that starred alongside Javier Pastore under Delio Rossi, though his talent has still been evident in flashes. The Slovenian was Palermo's best player over the second half of last season, even if he was unable to single-handedly prevent the rosanero from being relegated to Serie B.

How Iličić will fit into an already-packed Fiorentina midfield remains to be seen, with a formation change from coach Vincenzo Montella necessary if he's to slot into his preferred position behind the striker. With a wealth of excellent attacking options available, it's tough to predict how the viola will line up in their opening game of the season.

Rather more certain is that Iličić adds yet more quality to a side shaping up to be the most exciting in Serie A this season, and strengthens their title credentials even further.
