Bayer Leverkusen continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. The three points keeps Leverkusen level atop the Bundesliga table with three other teams.
Bayer Leverkusen vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach: Final score 4-2, Sidney Sam scores two to lead Leverkusen to another win
Bayer Leverkusen continued their perfect run to start the season with a 4-2 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Sami Hyypiä made one change from the last match by bringing in Giulio Donati to play right back. Otherwise, his lineup remained the same as it has for the other league games. Lucien Favre went with the same lineup that beat Hannover last weekend.
Leverkusen started well and were awarded a penalty for a handball in the 23rd minute Kießling coolly dispatched the spot kick to give Leverkusen the 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Kießling turned provider and fed Sam for the 2-0 lead. They nearly made it 3-0 before the half, but Kießling wasn’t able to convert his header.
Just after halftime, Juan Arango forced Bernd Leno into a good save. Martin Stranzl scored on the subsequent corner from Patrick Herrmann to pull one back for Gladbach. Three minutes later, the score was level after Arango beat Leno.
The score was level for only a few minutes. In the 61st minute, Sam ripped a shot that Ter Stegen was unable to save and, just like that, gave his side the lead once again. Gladbach pushed for the equalizer, but the goal came at the other end of the field. Gonzalo Castro gave his side the 4-2 lead and put the nail in Gladbach’s coffin with a shot from distance that rippled the back of the net.
As mentioned, Leverkusen remain atop the table with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Mainz. They're better equipped this season to compete on multiple fronts and will want to put on a good showing in the Champions League. Gladbach had the most difficult start to the season with Bayern and Leverkusen away, so they won't be too bummed out that they only have three points after the first three games.
