Bundesliga, Week 3 wrap: Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart grab first wins of the season
Eintracht Frankfurt picked up their first win of the season against Eintracht Braunschweig. Elsewhere, Stuttgart’s early season woes continued with a loss to Augsburg.
Frankfurt finally picked up their first points of the season with a win away to Braunschweig. The visitors controlled the match early, mostly due to the superb play of Takashi Inui. The Japanese midfielder continually terrorized the Braunschweig defense and even struck the post in the first half.
However, for all of their dominance, Frankfurt wouldn’t beat Daniel Davari until the second half. Alexander Meier’s shot took a deflection off of Braunschweig defender Ermin Bicakcic and went past Davari for the 1-0 advantage. They doubled their lead ten minutes later through Stefan Aigner with a simple finish. Kevin Trapp stood tall for the remainder of the match, and Frankfurt grabbed all three points.
Augsburg 2 - 1 Stuttgart
Bruno Labbadia is on the hot seat in Stuttgart after starting the season with zero points, so a trip to Augsburg seemed like it would be a good cure for their issues. Haha. Wrong.
Augsburg were on top after only six minutes. Paul Verhaegh whipped in a cross, and Halil Altintop beat everyone to it. The goal was Augsburg’s first as a team this season. In the 36th minute, Augsburg doubled their lead. Raphael Holzhauser’s free kick was headed in by the man with the longest name, Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker.
Stuttgart did pull one back before halftime on a Vedad Ibisevic penalty, however. Verhaegh fouled Alexandru Maxim in the penalty area, and the Bosnian converted the spot kick for his second goal of the season. Unfortunately for Stuttgart, this would be the highlight of the match for them.
The result jumps Augsburg all the way up to 12th in the table, while Stuttgart are in 17th place. Stuttgart and Braunschweig are the only two Bundesliga clubs without points after three games.
