Luis Suarez says Liverpool promised he could leave, contract includes release clause

Luis Suarez has leveled some heavy accusations against Liverpool.

Last summer, Liverpool promised Luis Suarez that he could leave the club this summer if the Reds didn't qualify for the Champions League, the striker told the . Now he is calling upon the club to keep their word, while also insisting that he will go to the Premier League to enforce a £40 million release clause that he says is in his contract.

Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I’d be allowed to go. I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish – now all I want is for Liverpool to honor our agreement.

The idea that Liverpool would promise Suarez an exit if they did not qualify for the Champions League is laughable considering nobody, not even many of the fans who piled into Anfield, believed they could really finish in the top four. Such a promise would only make sense if they were content to sell him this summer, which clearly they are not.

Suarez has been the subject of transfer rumors, with Real Madrid and Arsenal interested in buying the striker. The Gunners went as far as lodging a £40,000,001 bid for Suarez, which Liverpool rejected outright.

Arsenal's bid has led to much of Suarez's consternation. Beyond what he claims was a promise from Liverpool, he has insisted that his contract requires the club to sell if someone meets a £40 million release clause and the Reds' rejection of the Gunners' bid is a breach of his contract. It's so egregious that Suarez had no problem threatening that the case be taken to the Premier League.

I have the club’s word and we have the written contract and we are happy to take this to the Premier League for them to decide the case but I do not want it to come to that.

Whether Suarez’s claims are true remain to be seen. A promise is one thing, but a breach of contract is another and if true, Suarez would have a case with the Premier League that he would almost assuredly win.

If Suarez does join Arsenal, that changes the complexion of the Champions League and the race for the European places in the Premier League. It would also change the Gunners and the perception of Arsene Wenger, both of whom have been under fire all summer for their lack of buys.

But before Suarez can join Arsenal, he has business to sort out with Liverpool and the only assurance seems to be that it will end ugly.
