Wojciech Szczesny sees red; Arsenal are still alive

Arsenal were doing well against Bayern Munich. Then Wojciech Szczesny got sent off. Then David Alaba missed a penalty. This game is amazing.

Wednesday's Champions League encounter between Bayern Munich and Arsenal was supposed to be a competitive, but relatively straightforward, match in which Bayern was the stronger side. They'd get a draw or narrow win, then go through to the quarterfinals comfortably with a convincing home performance. Right?

No, instead we've got madness. About 30 minutes after Mesut Özil drew and missed a penalty, Bayern drew one of their own. Arjen Robben pulled off a spectacular move to draw it, and the result was disastrous for the Gunners: Wojciech Szczesny was shown a straight red card.

Lukasz Fabianski marched on, and it was going to be no fault of his when he conceded a penalty, then probably two or three subsequent goals. But he did no such thing, because David Alaba was conquered by the post monster.

At this point, it’ll be a miracle if Arsenal hold on to a clean sheet to give themselves a chance at the Allianz Arena, but they’re still in this tie. Somehow.
