Fortunately for de Jong, it didn’t matter, with the Dutch hanging on to record their second win in as many group stage games. With this Australia’s second defeat, their World Cup is all but over.

Dean MouhtaropoulosAustralia played extremely well against Chile, despite taking a 3-1 loss in the match. They defended well and put themselves in a position to steal a point. Considering they were written off before the tournament even began, it was a definite reminder that they are not to be overlooked. Unfortunately for the Socceroos, there was some bad news coming out of the first match, as fullback Ivan Franjic was ruled out of the tournament with a torn hamstring.
