Sebastian Coates moves from Liverpool to Sunderland on loan

It’s a move that’s good for everyone.

Liverpool have offloaded Sebastian Coates, at least for a year, loaning him out to Sunderland. The Black Cats were in serious need of another body in central defense, and Coates has the potential to be a very good pickup for them. He is also good at holding scarves.

Coates was signed to serious acclaim back in 2011, but he’s failed to meet expectations at Anfield. Between the fairly low standard of football he came from and injury issues, he’s never quite achieved the level that he was projected to in the Premier League. At the end of last season, he was loaned to Nacional in his native Uruguay to regain fitness, and a loan deal or sale was always expected this summer.

When fully fit, Coates has been a good player for Uruguay, even if he’s never quite put it together for Liverpool. There’s a chance he never becomes a great Premier League player, but it’s equally likely that Sunderland have pulled off a total steal.
