Official: Toby Alderweireld signs for Southampton

Toby Alderweireld has signed for Southampton from Atletico Madrid, the club have confirmed.

Toby Alderweireld has officially signed for Southampton after the club confirmed his move from Atletico Madrid. The defender is on a season-long loan where he will join up with boss Ronald Koeman.

Last season, after joining Atléti from Ajax, Alderweireld didn’t get much playing time. He probably expected to get plenty of minutes with Atléti not having many senior defenders on their squad, but starters Miranda and Diego Godin were impeccable all season long. With the same pair set to be first choice yet again, Alderweireld became expendable, and Southampton are now the beneficiaries.

Southampton reportedly beat out competition from Newcastle, Sunderland and even Arsenal to complete the deal for the defender from the Spanish champions. Southampton have had to undergo serious changes this season as a result of selling several high-profile players, although they are now mostly replaced, with Alderweireld stepping into the gap left by the departing Dejan Lovren.
