AS Roma have deepened their defense on deadline day with the loan capture of Newcastle United defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. They have paid the Premier League club an initial €1m loan fee to borrow the French international for the season, and will have to pay €6m in the future if they want to convert the loan into a permanent deal.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa joins AS Roma on loan
Roma have signed French defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa on loan from Newcastle United.
It's a solid signing for Rudi Garcia's scudetto hopefuls, with Yanga-Mbiwa having excelled with boyhood club Montpellier before moving to Newcastle. Indeed, he was a crucial part of the Montpellier side that upset all odds to win the French title in 2012. Since moving to England he hasn't been quite as impressive, and has fallen out of favour with Magpies boss Alan Pardew, but he's still a good rotation option.
With Roma having lost Mehdi Benatia, Alessio Romagnoli, Rafael Tolói and Tin Jedvaj from their back line this window, signing Yanga-Mbiwa for a pretty low fee makes a lot of sense.
