Bayern Munich vs. Shakhtar Donetsk 2015: Final score 7-0, Germans thump 10-man Shakhtar

An early red card against Shakhtar allowed Bayern Munich to cruise into the next round.

Bayern Munich took advantage of one of the fastest red card in Champions League history to crush ten man Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 on Wednesday. Thomas Müller scored twice to lead the way for the Germans, who claimed a spot in the quarterfinals with the victory.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s day got off to just about the worst start possible. In the 3rd minute Olexandr Kucher made a rash challenge on Mario Götze in the area, leading the referee to award not only a penalty, but show Kucher a straight red, apparently for a denial of a goal scoring opportunity. Was it a penalty? Yeah. Was it a red card? Absolutely not, but it left the visitors down both a goal and a man as Thomas Müller scored his penalty kick.

Not everything was rosey for Bayern though as Arjen Robben left the match in the 19th minute after appearing to injure his hamstring. The injury didn't seem serious, and the substitution appeared to be precautionary.

Bayern doubled their lead, and locked up a place in the quarterfinals in the 34th minute when Jerome Boateng finished off a rebound at the near post to make it 2-0. Müller had he initial chance, firing a headed down ball right at Andriy Pyatov from inside the penalty spot. The Shakhtar keeper made the save, but the ball went off his hand and right to Boateng for the tap-in goal.

Things continued to go well for Bayern in the second half as Franck Ribéry played a nice one-two with David Alaba before drilling a low show through traffic and past Pyatov inside the far post. Thomas Müller scored his second goal of the day minutes later, finishing off a deflected shot into a wide open net in the 51st minute.

Even defender Holger Badstuber got in on the fun, scoring Bayern’s 5th goal in the 63rd minute with a short range header off Pyatov’s hand. Robert Lewandowksi didn’t want to be left out either, so he scored in the 75th to make it 6-0.

Yes, there was a 7th goal. Mario Götze scored it.

Poor Shakhtar. They were never even allowed to get into the game, and they ended up getting steamrolled.
