The UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid has featured some of the most exciting soccer seen anywhere in the world this season, so neutral fans will be thrilled about it going to extra time. After an action-packed second half, the two teams ended up tied 3-3 on aggregate with the same number of away goals, necessitating extra time.

Bayern came into the second leg trailing and got back into the tie thanks to a penalty. Arjen Robben drew it, then Robert Lewandowski converted from the penalty spot.
But Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t going to let the Bavarians pull off a comeback unimpeded. He put Madrid on the board with his 101st career goal in European competitions to give his team a bit of a cushion.
But that goal didn’t flip the result. Bayern needed to score before it, and they needed to score after it. What Ronaldo’s goal did do was make extra time possible, and Bayern forced it in the most unlikely way possible — by letting Madrid do it for them. Bayern’s equalizer was a comical own goal by the usually clutch Sergio Ramos.
While that goal gave Bayern a chance to win it in extra time, they’ll have to do so short-handed thanks to a controversial call. Arturo Vidal was shown a second yellow card for an aggressive challenge late in regulation, but unfairly. Replays showed that he won the ball cleanly, making no contact with any Madrid player.
Bayern worked hard to come back, and they’ll have to work even harder to win the match.
