Novak Djokovic will play for his second Australian Open title after taking out Roger Federer at Australian Open 2011 on Thursday. The third-seeded Serb took out Fed in convincing fashion, winning in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a three-hour match. It’s his second straight semifinal win against Federer in a Grand Slam.
Roger Federer Vs. Novak Djokovic, Australian Open 2011: World No. 2 Dominated By Serb In Three Set Loss
Based solely on the match statistics, it would be hard to differentiate the winner, but it was Djokovic who was able to convert the big points in the contest. It started in the opening set tiebreaker, when Novak went up a mini-break on Federer early, and never looked back, taking it 7-3.
In the third set, Djokovic saved four break points in the first game, before coming out and breaking Federer in the second game. The two exchanged breaks later in the set, after which Novak took the set and the match, 6-4.
Djokovic was able to convert five of his 13 break point chances, while Federer only capitalized on three of his 10. This — and Federer’s 43 unforced errors — proved to be the difference in the match.
Novak goes on to play the winner of Andy Murray vs. David Ferrer on Sunday.
