Scores and highlights from Day 11 of the Australian Open 2011, where all three singles matches played ended in upsets. (Don’t worry, America! We’ve still got the Bryan bros!)
• No. 3 Novak Djokovic def. No. 2 Roger Federer, 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 6-4.
Breathless pundits sound the gong furiously, heralding the demise of the Federer-Nadal rivalry as the biggest ticket in town, and the internet’s power animal moves on to face either Andy Murray or David Ferrer. The last time an Australian Open final contained neither player, it was 2008 and Djokovic was there to take home the title.
• No. 9 Li Na def. No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, 3-6 7-5 6-3.
Forget winning China’s first Grand Slam event just for a minute -- Li is the first player from her country to even reach the finals of an event of this magnitude. She’ll face a formidable foe once she gets there: Kim Clijsters, in her second straight Grand Slam final and gunning for a second straight Grand Slam win.
• No. 3 Kim Clijsters def. No. 2 Vera Zvonareva, 6-3 6-3.
This one, perhaps, we might have seen coming. It took barely over an hour, and it looked easy. Clijsters will enter the finals as a heavy favorite over Li, but we’ve been surprised before (and more than once this week).
• Over in doubles action, the Brothers Bryan cruised through their semifinal match, 6-3 6-3, defeating Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Roger. Bob-and-Mike advance to the finals, where they’ll face the third-ranked Indian team of Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes.
