Serena Williams First Match Of 2012 To Be At Brisbane International

Last week, Serena Williams’ agent confirmed she wouldn’t be competing again during the 2011 season.

It’s a season that’s brought her rehabilitation from a foot injury and an announcement in mid-March that a hematoma and a pulmonary embolism had hospitalized her.

But, Williams already has her first tournament of 2012 scheduled starting with the very first day of the new year. The American star will compete in the Brisbane International beginning Jan. 1, 2012. For many years, the tournament served as a warm up to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. Williams has won five Slam titles down under.

At the tournament, Williams could match up against her U.S. Open finals opponent Samantha Stosur. Other competitors include Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova. With Clijsters in the draw, it is more than likely she will defend her Australian Open title after she was sidelined during the 2011 season for a torn abdominal muscle.

“Well, I never played in Brisbane and I’ve never been to Brisbane (but I’ve) heard great things about it,” Williams said in a statement.
