Shanghai Master’s top-seed Rafael Nadal exited the tournament in the third round with a loss to Florian Mayer of Germany on Friday. The World No. 2 was beat in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.

Mayer, the tournament’s 15th seed, called it the biggest win of his career.

Nadal called it a match his opponent played well, and one he didn’t.

“I felt that I was not playing badly from the baseline. But my return, when he was serving the first serve, was terrible tonight. I only won four points in the whole match on his first serve,” explained Nadal. “For me today is disappointing day. I felt that I did everything right... practicing with good motivation, practicing well in general.”

With Nadal’s early exit, the tournament’s top seed remaining is No. 2 seed Andy Murray. He is the tournament’s defending champion. In his third-round match, despite dropping the middle set, Murray defeated Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
