ATP Opposed To Extending U.S. Open To 15-Day Tournament

The U.S. Tennis Association and CBS began talks last month about expanding the U.S. Open by one day to give a day of rest in between the semifinal and final match. Sixteen-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer called it the “right move for our sport.”

But on Friday,Executive Chairman and President Adam Helfant said the ATP is opposed to expanding the U.S. Open schedule to a 15-day tournament. If the discussion had been approved, the U.S. Open would have been the first tournament to have a Monday final.

"We are pleased the U.S.T.A. is addressing as a priority the players' concerns about scheduling the U.S. Open men's semi- finals and finals on consecutive days," Helfant said in an e- mailed statement to Bloomberg News. "However, we don't necessarily see how the right solution would be expanding the tournament to fifteen days. We continue to have very open conversations with the U.S.T.A. about this."
