No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was defeated in straight sets, winning only six games. The Dane was playing her third match in three days in the WTA Championships in Istanbul. She also said she felt ill.

Petra Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, beat Wozniacki 6-4,6-2 to reach the semifinals of the season-ending tournament.

Kvitova dominated the match with 36 winners to Wozniacki’s four. Kvitova improved to 2-0 in the round-robin style.

“It was very strange game,” Kvitova said. “I mean, of course I’m happy that I won, but sometimes I felt like work on the court when I play against Caroline because I know that she’s not OK.”

Victoria Azarenka also won on Thursday. After defeating 2011 U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur, Azarenka defeated 2011 French Open champion Li Na.

“I think she’s a very, very tough opponent,” Azarenka said about Li. “Especially if you give her one rhythm, she’s really solid and she can stay and outpower anybody. So I had to adjust, because the last two meetings that we had she really took advantage of me playing the same way ... I had to change something and be more creative today.”

Li will take on Stosur on Friday.

Maria Sharapova has been eliminated from the tournament.
