Since Alex Bogomolov Jr. was a boy, he’s dreamed of playing for the country where he was born. This week, the American said he wants to represent Russia at the Davis Cup.

Bogomolov was born in Moscow, moving to Mexico at age 9 before he came to America in 1992.

They 28-year-old has represented the U.S.A. but has never played in a Davis Cup match.

“I can help the Russian team this winter, as I have never played for the American team in the Davis Cup,” Bogomolov said.

Russia’s next Davis Cup match is against Austria on Feb. 10-12, 2012.

Currently ranked No. 36 in the world, Bogomolov has yet to win an ATP title, but is the fourth-highest ranked American player.

Bogomolov’s father, a renowned tennis coach in the former Soviet Union, helped his son’s negotiations with the Russian Tennis Federation’s president Shamil Tarpishchev.

If a player is eligible to represent more than one country, Davis Cup rules state that the national association must apply to the International Tennis Federation six months prior to the match to await a ruling.

It is being reported that ITF will look at the request in its next meeting in December.
