But when the final ball fell, Tsonga’s comeback took two hours and 29 minutes. He had won 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 against Juan Martin Del Potro at the Austrian Open.
Despite dropping a 63-minute first set, the top-seeded Tsonga slammed 25 aces and finished off his comeback with a winner: a forehand volley.
Tsonga’s defeat of the second-seed puts him ahead of American Mardy Fish into seventh place for the year-end eight-man ATP tournament in London next month.
Del Potro is also attempting to make the season-ending tournament, but he currently sits at 11th
The ATP World Tour Finals take place Nov. 20 to 27.
“Juan Martin played great until in the second set. I was down a bit after losing (another) first set in the tiebreaker,” Tsonga said. “But I fought on and didn’t give away any easy points after that.”
