In July, Petra Kvitova won her first Wimbledon title in England. Now, in October, she wins her first WTA Championship after defeating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in a three-set, 2.5 hour match. The final score was 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

She started 2011 ranked No. 34. With this win, the 21-year-old earns a year-end No. 2 ranking. Caroline Wozniacki finished 2011 with the No. 1 slot to her name.

Kvitova, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, was the only player to not lose a match in the tournament that opened with a round robin style of play.

Finishing above the seven other WTA players selected for the year-end tournament, Kvitova walked away with the $1.75 million jackpot

“When I started the season I was 34, and I didn’t expect that I will be sitting here as champion and I have grand slam already,” Kvitova told reporters. “Really it’s unbelievable. It’s really a big step for me.”
