As of Friday morning, former world No. 1 Dinara Safina was retiring, according to her brother Marat Safin. Safin was unclear as to his sister’s future plans, but did seem certain she was retiring.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding Dinara Safina’s plans to retire. At last check, she said she was mulling over her next move.

“An athlete has lived with sports for 20 years. Now she needs a year to pull herself together, then she will decide,” Safin said. “She is only 25 and there’s no need to hurry her.”
By Friday afternoon, Safina contradicted her brother on her Twitter account saying she was still undecided as to her future in tennis.

The Russian tennis player did decide in May to take an indefinite break from the game. At the time, she was suffering from chronic back pain. Her chances of a returns seemed slim. She said then that she didn’t want to “torture myself and my body any longer.” She suffered the back injury in 2010.
The 25-year-old turned pro in 2001 and reached the No. 1 spot on the WTA in 2009 and spent 26 weeks there. Her and her brother are the first brother-sister combination in the game’s history to both appear at the top slot in the game. Safina has won 12 WTA titles.
