Pete Sampras Beat Jimmy Courier in 2011?
It won’t go down in many record books, if any.
But, Pete Sampras beat Jimmy Courier on Saturday.
At 40 years old, good ol’ Pete was able to come out the winner, 8-7 (7-4) in the Surprise tennis tournament in Surprise, Arizona. The victory also meant Sampras won the tournament.
So, why isn’t ESPN running the news of one tennis great defeating another tennis great along its bottom banner?
Well, it was a match played in a tournament of greats. The Championship Series, a 12-stop ATP tour, features past tennis greats.
At the end of the tour, the top three finishers split $1 million.
But the tournaments include more than just match play. Before the night’s games, the players joined VIP guests in a clinic, participated in a question-and-answer session and did a private meet and greet with a few lucky fans.
Chris Evert and Michael Chang were among the other tennis greats that came out to play.
Despite having two sons, Sampras’ 15-year tour stint still runs through his body. He said he’s not ready to give up the sport yet.
“As long as I’m enjoying it and my body stays healthy, I see myself doing it for a little while longer,” Sampras said. “It gives me a good balance.”
