Swiss Indoor Results: Novak Djokovic Wins First Match After Six Week Injury Break

It took three sets, but Novak Djokovic won his first match after a six-week injury break kept him from the ATP.

Djokovic, who suffered a back injury during a Davis Cup match against Juan Martin Del Potro in September, defeated Xavier Malisse 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the opening round of play at the Swiss Indoors in Basle, Switzerland.

The back injury might have kept Djokovic from the tour, but it didn’t damper his joking.

Taking the court for the first time since Sept. 16, the Serb was dressed in all black for his match that took place the day after Halloween. He topped it off with a fright mask that resembled rock star Alice Cooper.

The match took 2 hours and 13 minutes

“I’m only just back from the biggest injury of my career,” Djokovic stated afterwards. “It was a big ask for me to have played really well.”

Other results from today include:

Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic was upset by wild-card entry Japan’s Kei Nishikori in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 contest.

No. 327 Michael Lammer No. 37 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, 6-4, 6-3. It is Lammer’s first tour win this of 2011.

Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic edged Fracne’s Michael Llodra 7-5, 6-4.

Stanislas Wawrinka won 6-4, 6-4 against Ivan Dodig.

Thomaz Belluci couldn’t hold on after the first set and lost to Jarkko Nieminen of Finald 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3.

Andreas Seppi of Italy beat Giller Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-2.
