Rafael Nadal Wins Seventh Consecutive Monte Carlo Title

On Sunday, inevitability ran its course: once more, Rafael Nadal is the ruler of Monte Carlo’s clay.

Nadal, the world’s No. 1, won his seventh straight title at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of David Ferrer in the tournament final. In doing so, Nadal extended his ATP record for consecutive wins at one event.

And even without the shadow of Novak Djokovic, who had beaten Nadal twice in the last month but missed this event due to injury, Nadal’s victory is an impressive prelude to the French Open. Ferrer, a very good clay court player, played Nadal almost evenly, but gave up four break points to Rafa’s two; that turned out to be the difference in the quick two-set match.

With the win, Nadal runs his all-time record at Monte Carlo to 34-1. His lone loss came in his first time competing in the event, in 2003.
