Less than two hours after Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro’s French Open 2011 match began, play at Roland Garros has been suspended on account of darkness. The World No. 2 and No. 25 are tied at one set apiece, with Djokovic taking the first set 6-3 and Del Potro notching an identical second-set score.
French Open 2011 Results: Novak Djokovic-Juan Martin Del Potro Match Suspended
In an inexplicable scheduling quirk, two high-profile men’s matches were scheduled back-to-back on Court Philippe Chatrier on Day 6, and when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga decided to stage the mère of all meltdowns and take his sweet time doing it, the match was shuffled to Court Suzanne Lenglen. Djokovic’s first-set win was a decisive one, but momentum now decidedly belongs to Del Potro, who took a set off his ranking superior despite tweaking an ankle late in the match. Play will resume Saturday afternoon.
In other top matches from Day 6:
• No. 3 Vera Zvonareva def. Anastasia Rodionova, 6-2 6-3.
• No. 13 Richard Gasquet def. No. 23 Thomaz Bellucci, 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-3.
• No. 14 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Nuria Llagostera Vives, 3-6 6-3 6-3.
In American news, the No. 6 doubles team of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy fell to Germany’s Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic, 6-1 1-6 7-6(5), in second-round action.
Day 7 play at the French Open 2011 will begin at 5 a.m. EDT Saturday morning.
