Gael Monfils Upset Juan Carlos Ferrero By In Five Sets At 2011 US Open
Gael Monfils is out of the 2011 US Open after being knocked off by Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second-round. Monfils was the seventh-seed, but struggled throughout, dropping the first, fourth and fifth sets in a lengthy battle he ended up losing.
After Ferrero took the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), Monfils bounced back, sweeping the next two sets, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-5), to momentarily seize control of the match. It didn’t last long, however, as Ferrero finished strong en route to the upset win.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer both take the court in their second-round match-ups on the men’s side. Meanwhile for the women, No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki headlines the field.
There are some Americans on the court Thursday worth noting. Men’s World No. 8 Mardy Fish will square off against Malek Jaziri while over on the women’s side, Serena Williams will meet Michaella Krajicek for the chance to advance to the third round.
