Davis Cup 2011: Novak Djokovic Withdraws Due To Back Pain, Argentina To Face Spain In The Finals

Argentina will face Spain in the 2011 Davis Cup finals in December after Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from Sunday’s match against Juan Martin Del Potro due to severe back pain. With Djokovic’s withdrawal, Argentina won its decisive third match of the best-of-five series. Djokovic left in the third game of the second set after crumpling in a heap following a forehand return.

Djokovic pulled out of Friday’s match against David Nalbandian with back pain as well. Viktor Troicki played in Djokovic’s stead, losing in four sets. On Sunday, just six days after his win in the U.S. Open finals over Rafael Nadal, Djokovic was seen stretching when the players switched sides, and taking a medical break between sets.

Spain clinched their spot in the finals following Nadal’s straight-set victory over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. With last year’s champion Serbia now out, Spain enters the finals as the prohibitive favorite.
