U.S. Open 2011: Donald Young Defeats Juan Ignacio Chela, Makes First Grand Slam Round Of 16

Donald Young has been one of the last best hopes of avoiding a lost generation in American men’s tennis for some time. At the 2011 U.S. Open, he’s made good on that talent and made his way to the second week of the Grand Slam tournament.

Young defeated Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday, earning passage to the round of 16 in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his young career.

Young, who turned 22 in July, has been dwelling in the lower reaches of the ATP Tour since 2007, when he first reached the top 100 of the ATP rankings, but had never made it past the second round of a major before the 2011 U.S. Open. Now, Young will face either fourth-seeded Andy Murray or Feliciano Lopez for the right to make his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
